    How can Exploitation Happen?

    How can Exploitation Happen?

We have all known people who are jerks. Sometimes itís obvious, sometimes itís not. Sometimes we may see a friend or someone in the community dating a really mean, nasty person and think ďwhy on earth is she with him and why doesnít she just leave?!Ē Well, itís not always that easy and this is certainly the case with human trafficking. The trafficker doesnít want you, or that person, to leave or stop because then they wonít get the benefits they were collecting at your expense. They know exactly what to do to keep you there and hereís how they do it. Since weíre talking about domestic trafficking, trafficking that happens in Canada, and itís usually forced prostitution of young women, Iíll use that as an example to explain the process.

    1. Recruitment

Wanna take a guess at the average age of recruitment here in Canada?
    ...
12-14 years! Itís bananas! Traffickers will be on the lookout for young girls anywhere they can, but especially through social media and Facebook. Do you know anyone your age that doesnít have Facebook? Didnít think so! Sometimes what may start out as a new friend, or even love interest, may not be what it seems.

    1. Grooming

Ever been ďlove-bombedĒ? Well traffickers donít exactly walk around wearing a sign that says ďHey, I seem nice now but soon enough Iím going to force you to work for me and do things you really donít want to doĒ. That would be crazy, right? Their tactic instead is to make their new recruits feel like the most special, loved girl in the world. This is the ultimate Prince Charming and you are the queen. Most victims will really start to feel like they are in a meaningful, committed relationship with their trafficker. During this phase, the trafficker will learn everything he can about the girl that he may be able to use to his advantage later on.

    1. Isolation/Conning/Breaking

While things may have seemed like they were on their way to a fairytale ending, this is when things take a turn for the worst. The trafficker will likely start putting down their victim to try to lower their self-esteem, they may get angry and unpredictable, they may start getting controlling and jealous, just to keep the victim on edge. And sooner or later, they ask the girl to engage in a sexual act for money Ė claiming that it is only one time and they really, really need her to do it.

Remember, it doesnít always happen this way. There are lots of kinds of trafficking and you can read real examples on todayís power-point slide. Sometimes victims are forced into doing work because they are blackmailed, or someone threatens their family. Other times, sadly, it IS their family who is asking them to do the acts. Or maybe itís an underage boy who wants to gain drugs by selling sex down South. Other times you may not even realize itís happening Ė like if your photo or video is being bought online.

These folks have an invested interest in keeping the work going Ė whether itís just to put food on the table, or make hard cash. Through abuse, blackmail, threats, fear of police, intimidation and even sometimes forced drug addiction... leaving feels impossible.

I know this all sounds pretty scary Ė and it is. But take a listen to the power-points to see if you, or someone you know, may be at higher risk for trafficking. Tomorrow weíll start talking about what you can do to prevent, intervene and stop human trafficking in your communities and keep your loved ones, and YOU, safe!

It's sad how this can happen to innocent people, they shouldn't have to goo through the pain or be too scared to stand up for themselves.

Thanks for the post Kami. How can we help girls or boys stand up for themselves? Do you have any thoughts on that?

Yes Kaglukark - it is estimated that about 10% of victims are males, but this is based on First Nations survival sex workers stats in BC. There are stories of Inuit boys/young men lured into the trade in Montreal and Toronto, but without an opportunity to sit down and hear their stories, it's difficult to quantify. However, if anyone is open to sharing their story, I do compensate to collect survivor interviews and all information is strictly confidential. Anyone interesting in chatting with me either in the North or Montreal, Ottawa or Toronto, please call me at (819) 208-8561. I can travel to you.

Those people are so deceived poor, to strengthen the legal awareness of young people, and the ability to distinguish right from wrong.

These things have an impact for sure. The most basic thing is to experience it all that is supportive and help us knowing how it all goes. Through traveling we can actually explore the world and grow in a manner which can help us with a lot.

Human trafficker make opportunity to the young girls who are in demand to the people who are sex maniac. For us girls, we should have to be careful and vigilant to ourselves so that we could not put ourselves in danger.
